DYI Projects

Monday Morning Surprise

I always like to start the school year with something warm and welcoming. This year I wanted to do something different, and I noticed my co-workers had goodie bags for the kiddos. I try to do this for winter break or Valentine's Day, but I thought this would be a very cute idea for the beginning of the year. I found the poem on Pinterest, and instantly loved it. Its quick, easy, and inexpensive to do.

The Teacher Toolbox Paradigm

As I have mention in my previous post, Pinterest really is my educative addiction. The last two days, I have been hard at work creating my "Teacher Toolbox." The process was fairly simple. If you happen to put "Teacher Toolbox" in the Pinterest search box, you will be instantly be bombarded with tons and tons of ideas. There is also a plethora of sources for whatever you want your theme to be, your labels, etc. Me, being the DYI girl, decided to take it upon myself to make myself to create my own labels, color schemes, etc.

So let's start a the beginning. First, you have to obtain a toolbox. You can get one at Home Depot, or Lowe's. Make sure that they're available before you go and purchase one. When I went, online it said that there were 14 available, when I got to the store there were none to be found. Luckily, I happen to look up and low and behold there was an entire set. Happily, I proceeded to buy the toolbox, along with a spray primer, and the pretty violet spray paint color. I went across the street to my nearest craft store and bought the beautiful craft paper. Then home to the real work...

Instead of choosing among the many templates for the signs, I chose to create my own. Thanks to the craft paper I chose, I was able to choose the color scheme. To create the templates, I did use some of the information to create the proper size of the boxes. When I was happy with my labels, I printed them onto card stock paper. Now for the tedious part, cutting. First, I had to cut the craft paper to the proper size. Next, I had to cut around the labels (not including the box) and glue them onto the craft paper. Finally, (and now this is up to your style) I Modge Podged the finalized labels onto the front of the drawers. I've also read about using double-sided tape to put your labels on. The reason I went for Modge Podge is because I feel that it is more durable, as opposed to having the raw paper hitting against whatever you decide to put inside the drawers. While the labels were drying, I put on my paint pants (LOL)  and took my original grey toolbox, primer, and spray paint and outside I went. The very first thing you have to do (I recently learned) is to put a coat of paint primer. I chose a spray as it was easier. The purpose of the primer is to make sure that whatever color you put on top will stick longer and be more resistant to the daily bumps that I am sure the box will receive throughout the years to come. I let that dry, and once I decided it was dry, I went ahead a spray painted it with a shade of my favorite color. I bet you can't guess which one it is :). After it was all dry, I took it back and assembled it together. As a finishing touch, using a sharpie paint marker, I put my name on the top of it.

So thats it! It was certainly a process, but in the end, I am super happy with how it all came out and I know that I will be making for DIY things for my classroom.

Happy Creating!!
